This is the bar, former card shop, I believe, that kickstarted the Renaissance or the beginning of what some now call trendy SoBo (sic). A great community hangout for people of all kinds, the Bear is characterized by tolerance, empathy, friendliness, sociability, and ultimately drunkenness with fantastic beers and ciders. The snacks are also locally sourced and have a a healthy edge to them. To top it all, the Bear Beer Bunch are the friendliest bunch of people you could hope to meet. Long may it last.

While not cheap, the ales here are exceptional in a town blessed with great real ale spots. It's a slightly weird setup (table service, basically. No bar) but the menu is constantly changing, very high quality and serving beers for every taste. I'm a pale ale fan, my drinking buddy is a darker ale type, but we both had beers that we will remember for a long time here. In fact, we both had a flight of thirds, to our taste, and were very happy.

Decent pub. Lively and friendly. Good range of beers, but some are a little "too" quirky

Great little pub with a really good variety of beers and ciders to sample. Clearly run by people who appreciate good beer and a nice environment to enjoy it in. I like that there's plenty of new things to try, whatever your taste. There's not really a bar here to speak of, just tables and standing room. Plenty of people circulating making sure you can get a drink of you want one, but no central queue of people fighting to be servers next. Starting a tab was painless, and didn't require anything more than your name which was refreshing.Once you've sampled as many as you fancy, you can select some to take home with you to drink later which is a really nice idea, similar to what you'd get at your local microbrewery.Definitely somewhere I'll come again and if you like beer I'd strongly recommend you drop in here for a half or two. Keep up the good work!

Really enjoyed this place. Had a great selection of ales, beers and cider. Staff friendly and helpful to us newbies. There's no bar to speak of, just a board and you order direct from the staff milling around. Great ambience and would recommend.
